The federal government is an important customer of the moving and storage industry, representing about one quarter of all interstate moves handled by professional movers each year. The great majority are managed by the Department of Defense, as military service members and their families may be relocated every few years to a new duty station domestically or abroad. Civilian government employee relocations, including for the Department of State, are managed by the General Services Administration (GSA).
Information about pricing of government moves can be found in this section, with the military using the 400-NG tariff
and its rules for its shipments, and GSA using the GSA-01 tariff for its shipments. Fuel surcharges for military and GSA moves change each month based on the average diesel fuel price
calculated by the US Department of Energy.
