Interstate Van Lines of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Wins AMSA's Independent Mover of the Year Award

January 28, 2016

(Alexandria, VA) —Interstate Van Lines, headquartered in Springfield, Va., just outside Washington, D.C., has been named the nation's top independent moving company for 2015 by the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA). The company will be presented with the Independent Mover of the Year Award during AMSA's 97th Annual Education Conference & Expo in New Orleans, March 20-23.

The award, also known as "the Indy," reflects AMSA's and the industry's commitment to outstanding performance among independent movers as demonstrated through innovative business methods and practices, community involvement, customer service practices, employee relations, and operations that address a current and compelling social or economic issue. The recipient is selected by a panel of industry experts.

"Interstate Van Lines has set high standards for the industry and provides leadership as an innovator in moving services and solutions. They are a worthy honoree of this prestigious award," said Scott Michael, AMSA president and CEO. "All of us in the moving and storage industry salute Interstate Van Lines for their record of success and support for the community, as well as for their ProMover certification, which gives consumers great confidence that they are working with a quality, professional mover."

For more than 70 years, Interstate, a family-owned and operated enterprise, has grown to encompass a worldwide group of relocation management, transportation and logistics solutions serving government, corporate and individual customers. Today, Interstate employs nearly 300 people and maintains a fleet of more than 300 vehicles. It has earned numerous industry certifications and awards for quality and service, and was named 2015 Corporate Citizen of the Year (large business category) by the Northern Virginia Chamber, and has been ranked among the Washington Metropolitan area's elite private companies for five consecutive years.

Interstate has pioneered Top Hat® Service, which focuses on Quality, Innovation and Training with a daily commitment to delivering excellence. In addition, Interstate requires employees to take 80 hours of training in their "Talking Training House," the first of its kind in the industry, which was started in 1975. The intensive training program provides employees the expertise and experience required to move customer belongings with meticulous care.

Currently, Interstate supports more than 60 charities, education facilities and community organizations. For 24 years, Interstate has worked with the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program to deliver toys to 800+ children living in Barry Farm in Southeast Washington, D.C., the same community where Interstate was founded in 1943. Interstate also invests in scholarships at George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College, and supports George Mason's annual Patriot Pack Out Program, which in 2015 donated 72,000 pounds of food, clothing and appliances no longer needed by students. And, Interstate is a SmartWay® Transport Partner, an innovative collaboration between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and freight companies designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

"We are thrilled to have been selected as the AMSA Independent Mover of the Year for the second time," said John (J.D.) Morrissette, president of Interstate Van Lines. "It is a true honor to be recognized by your peers, and we are very proud of the Interstate Team who deliver our legendary Top Hat Service day in and day out."
