Moving and Storage InstituteThe Moving and Storage Institute (MSI) is the philanthropic arm of AMSA and was founded to foster educational opportunities for individuals in the moving and storage industry, facilitate the development of industry education and certification programs, and to cultivate a broader understanding and appreciation of the transportation of household goods moving and warehousing.

The last several years have been exceptionally productive for the MSI, as our revenues have increased substantially thanks in part to the successful expansion of our annual live and silent auctions, held in conjunction with AMSA’s annual education conference, and a growth in direct contributions from AMSA member companies. As a result, the MSI board of directors has committed funding for a broad range of projects, many of which launched in 2012.  Notable MSI activities include:

  • Funding for the development and delivery of a Financial Management Education Program created by industry expert David Duryee, based on his book 'Finance for Movers", and delivered as a series of six webinars

  • Funding support for Regional Professional Training Events that will be coordinated by the AMSA team and deliver a range of industry-specific training to a broad group of member companies

  • Updated Economic Impact Study on the moving & storage industry. The original 2008 study supported AMSA’s advocacy efforts and was the basis for collateral pieces that were widely used to inform and educate legislators, community partners and consumers about our industry. The updated study incorporates current data to help us understand and evaluate the impact of the economic recession

  • Annual Academic Scholarships: the MSI has awarded $65,000 in scholarships to AMSA member employees and their families in the last five years and nearly $160,000 since inception

  • Scholarship awards for Leaders Program participants

The MSI is also engaged in the following activities and programs:

Scholarships

One of the ways the MSI fulfills its mission is by annually awarding scholarships from the David Brodsky, Russell Schofield and MSI Scholarship Program. Since its inception in 2001, nearly $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to students interested in pursuing a business career in or related to the household goods moving and storage industry.

Research

In fulfilling its mission to cultivate a broader understanding and appreciation of the transportation of household goods moving and warehousing, the MSI launched a research agenda that supports and enhances industry advocacy and image efforts. The MSI commissioned a landmark study in 2008, “The Moving and Storage Industry in the U.S. Economy,” which collected, analyzed and reported U.S. Census Bureau and other economic data to reveal the impact of the moving and storage industry on the U.S. nationally and by state. The original study was updated in 2011 to quantify the impact of the Great Recession on the moving and storage industry. Both studies are available as free downloads to AMSA members and are available for purchase to non-members.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service

The MSI plays an important role in recognizing and lauding the noteworthy achievements and contributions of long-timeindustry leaders through its Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service, presented at AMSA's annual Education Conference.

MSI Annual Giving

The MSI is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that relies on cash and in-kind contributions to support its mission. The MSI is fully supported by generous donations from AMSA members, industry leaders and organizations such as the National Association of Independent Truckers.
